It's a Friday Finish

Scrappy HSTs is my UFO Finish for the week. I don't remember much about this top, I'm guessing I had received a bunch of charms from a rainbow swap, paired them up and started making HSTs. Because that was totally me in my "All About Piecing" stage of quilting. Got an idea... sounds fun... off to sew... 94 UFOs in the making!

I really enjoyed quilting this yesterday and found myself pausing my stitching often to study a block or admire a fabric. I was especially drawn to the light fabrics and am thinking my next project might be a Low Volume quilt.
I am usually not very comfortable with random scrappy... I'm more of a controlled scrappy quilter. But I find that my favorite thing about this quilt IS the random aspect of it!  I love how blocks like the pink/red one above or the yellow/orange or all blue below are mixed in with the "anything goes" blocks. I hope I can recreate this look again.
The other thing that strikes me about this quilt is that there only a few fabrics that would catch my eye in a quilt shop for purchase but look how they shine together! I think a 5" charm is the perfect world when it comes to fabric - it makes them all look great.
I used white Aurifil thread for the grid style walking foot quilting and I decided to enhance the happy colorful top with a pieced backing.

This quilt will be donated to Project Linus.

  2. Deb, congratulations on your beautiful finish! The bright scrappy colors are enlivening and refreshing!
Found you through your comment on crazymomquilts this morning and I have to tell you I was COMPLETELy encouraged!! Your comment was like a gift from God! Telling, you the clouds parted and the sun shone through!
Just yesterday, after a year or so of looking for a used Bernina 440QE, looking at all kinds of machines, reading all kinds of blogs, comparing reviews, etc., I finally concluded that my best solution was probably to purchase two machines - the Juki TL 2010 and the Juki HZL F600. Two for less than the price of one used Bernina and one new 7700. So my husband called and said let's go do it, drove with me 45 min to the area Juki dealer and I agreed to purchase both. Like you I am keeping my 24yo Pfaff 6152. Though a simple German girl, she has that wonderful IDT and even the owner of the dealership said keep her. This morning I was like maybe I should just wait on the F600 and save up for the 7700 or the like. Even my BFF Penny from sewtakeahike hadn't heard of the F600. So your comment was like a confirmation from Heaven and I was like yes! I'm not the only one who thinks this way!!
So thank you thank you thank you! And I have added your blog to my Favorites!! Looking forward to your completion of your 93 other UFO's as FO's!! Well done!! Enjoy!!

  4. Love this! Making me want to order some charm packs and make one myself. I love scrappy quilts because they remind me of growing up with the quilts at Grandma's house. Great job!

  5. I too am a "controlled" scrappy quilter. One day, I'll break out of that like you! Congrats on knocking another one off the UFO list. 94! Wow!

  7. love love love the pieced back! It's gorgeous. But then, i do have a bit of a soft spot for pieced backs. The scrappy look turned out great. Sometimes it can be really hard to figure out what to do with such tiny little pieces of fabric. I've just started working on a stack'n'whack using fat eighths that I picked up somewhere, sometime.
