Thursday Thoughts

How am I doing with FINISH - my word for 2013?  It looks like I'm at least talking about it a lot!
During the In Your Words blog hop I was introduced to Tagxedo while admiring the beautiful projects at Cherry Blossoms Quilting Studio. I plugged in my blog address and then had fun with the different colors and shapes. Grab a cup of coffee and go check it out... you will be there for a while!

I kind of like to play around with words. I saw on another blog where someone (wish I would have jotted it down) took their word for the year and expanded it letter by letter. Earlier in the month while I was sewing down binding on my Minnesota Ladyslipper quilt I kept my iPad next to me and played around with that concept.

F- Focus
I- Imperfect
N- Now
I- Imbalance
S- Simplify
H- Habit

Focus is all about keeping your eye on the prize. "The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing." by Stephen Covey is a quote I've always liked. It seems such like a simple thing to do, but I find it very hard! I get sidetracked very easily as do a lot of quilters. Every day I see beautiful fabrics, fantastic projects and new techniques that call my name. Enjoy them, admire them, pin them. Stay focused!

Imperfect is a struggle for me. I tend to want to do things perfectly or not do them at all. Finished imperfectly is better than unfinished perfectly is my new mantra. I'm never going to learn to FMQ if I expect to be perfect on Day 1! The fear of less than perfect is holding me back.

Now. I think of Nike's Just Do It and amend it slightly... Just Do It Now. Stop thinking about it and get to doing it! Not next week, tomorrow or later on - now.

Imbalance represents a choice I am making to devote a year to UFOs. I am giving up other things to focus on my goal of finishing a UFO a week. It will be very freeing to have less clutter in my mind and in my quilting room come 2014. I have to admit, even though I joke about them, I feel guilty and shameful at times for having so many UFOs laying around. Imbalance is needed for now to bring balance in the future.

Simplify is one of my favorite words. It has such meaning, reaches into all phases of life and can make a huge impact as well. Less is more and I try to think about this everyday.

Habit is another tough one for me. I have a hard time with structure, yet I fritter away a lot of time without it. I'm trying to establish new habits this year. 21 days to a new habit is something I learned in a course a long time ago. My first new habit is to spend 15 minutes a day purging an area of my house. Starting now!

  1. I want to play with this too! I hadn't heard from you about your missing parts and was curious if you had gotten to play with your new toys yet.

  3. I can so identify with your words on "imperfect". I am a Virgo (thus thinking things have to be perfect) and have a stash of pieced tops that I haven't quilted because I don't think I'm good enough at FMQ to tackle them yet! It's nice to know I'm not the only one that does this. You have motivated me to make this a fun priority. . let the quilting begin!

  4. I can't figure out just one word either. I've got a bunch. Love what you did with all of yours. You should print it out and frame it. Or find some way to turn it into fabric.

  5. This is a wonderful post. I like your word mug and I easily identify with your words - especially "Imperfect" and "Now" I spend far too much time thinking about what to make - especially in swaps and bees. My phrase for the year should be "do it straight away". I'm going to check out those links now :)
