What's the Word?

I am one of those people who loves making lists, resolutions and grand plans. However my follow through can leave a lot to be desired and this has been a life long problem for me. I seem to have either the attention span of a gnat or I can spend hours down a rabbit hole on one passion/project/task. The in between balancing act where life really happens is my ongoing struggle.

In 2013 I chose FINISH as my word for the year and I went all in by finishing 65 quilting projects that year - a whopping 57 UFOs and 8 new projects! So it might be understandable that I felt pretty confident heading into 2014 with "only" 43 UFOs.

My word for 2014 was SIMPLIFY and, as I posted HERE yesterday, I did manage a lot of simplifying in 2014. The part that went missing for the most part was the finishing. Achieving 90% or 65% of a goal isn't nearly as satisfying as 100%. My thing is to make great progress early on, then lose focus and move on to the next shiny object. Over and over. And as my regular readers know my quilting went completely dormant while I worked off blog on other things.

So instead of feeling free to choose a Fun Word for 2015 I've selected another Working Word. One that I hope will motivate me to zero in on the task at hand but also allow me the flexibility of choice that I need. I might be chasing 10 rabbits in total as I work towards my goals but I'm going to do it one step at a time. Thoughtfully and with purpose.

I've learned a lot about myself over the last few years and I think 2015 is the year that it all will come together. Some FINISH, some SIMPLIFY and a LOT of...

  7. Great post! We think alike more than we know.....I just was working on a post about changing my focus! I want more quality than quantity on my blog, so focus this year will shift to share the process a lot more. So I am cheering you on in finding your focus.

  8. Hi Deb
So much to comment on in this post. I love your synopsis of the last years, and the image of Focus for this. I will say, you sure read a lot! It's an important part of you, and it takes time so you might be more focused and productive than you give yourself credit for... ( I know, grammar...) Elsa is awesomely gorgeous. Those eyes! My word is Connect and connections, so I hope to keep in contact with you more this year, thru comments if nothing else. I get your posts thru email so I don't miss any, although I don't always come to comment I read. Imagine, we met thru my blog giveaway! I hope the mouse still makes you smile. 14. I wrote a big comment on your last post but it didn't publish due to me getting logged out of google. Anyway! It said I think you had a really successful year in 2014, and cleaning out and purging unused things is very refreshing. We did the same when we bought and house and moved in to it in September. I wasn't moving anything I didn't want or use anymore. Don't be too hard on yourself. Focus on whatever brings you joy at the time. Shiny new things, like beginning a new quilt, can be just what you need to do at the time.

Love the definition of FOCUS and the saying about the two rabbits!

  16. For many years, I thought I had a problem for not mult-tasking, like having two or more plans to achieve. But it's because of this adventure that I have taken that has told me it wasn't a problem at all: I just had to make sure the thing I do then should be fruitful in years to come! I like the idea of focusing on one goal at a time. It really pays off
